What Are You Reading?
June 6, 2010

Me? I’m trying to get through Beach Music by Pat Conroy.
To be honest? I’m having somewhat of a difficult time getting into it. I know! What is wrong with me, right? I mean come on, The Great Santini, right?! And The Prince of Tides?! Come on.
I wanted to get and read South of Broad but decided to read Beach Music first. I want to finish it before I get South of Broad. But dang, it is taking me forever to “get into it.”
A whole slew of other books sit on my shelf waiting to be read too. Believe me, I want to read all of them but finding time is tough. I reckon I need to stay up later than normal, read in the bathroom, read during my lunch hour, and/or get up at 3:00AM to read?
Tell me, how do you find time to read?

Conroy’s not bad, but the real reason he’s known is Robert Duvall’s performance in the movie of “The Great Santini.” If it weren’t for Duvall, Conroy would never have hit the best-seller list again. Want a great summer read? Find a copy of Ken Kesey’s “Sometimes A Great Notion.” Might just be the best novel I ever read. It was made into a movie, but the movie’s pretty lame.
Right now I’m reading “Lincoln, President-Elect” by Harold Holzer. I thought it would be interesting, but it turns out Lincoln made a very serious point of saying absolutely nothing controversial between his election and inauguration. Snooze.

Thanks Dan, another one to add to my list.

Ok…I wish I had a book IV!! So many books, so little time!!
At the moment I’m reading Saving Cece Honeycutt. It’s southern, of course,
and I think you’d like it.
Read South of Broad already. It was good, but not his best I don’t think.

I am reading Academ’s Fury, Book 2 in The Codex Alera by Jim Butcher right now. I read in spurts whenever I’m sick, during the holidays, on vacation at the beach, or when I fly on a plane. Lately I’ve tried reading books a little at a time in the evening before bed, but I run the risk of staying up too late if it’s very engrossing. I have about 50 books on my To Read list right now and at least a dozen on my shelf. argh!

A book IV! That’s a great idea, Beth! And Saving CeeCee Honeycutt was a great book. I can’t wait for Beth Hoffman’s next novel.
As for finding time to read, I stay up past GolfGuy’s bedtime. I sneak in at least a 1/2 hour to an hour that way. Other than that I carry a book with me EVERYWHERE. I get really cranky if I have to wait somewhere (doctor’s office, bank, a drive thru even) and I don’t have a book with me.

Actually, I struggle; I used to read a lot on the train to work. But for the past few years, work is only 2 train stops away = less than 5 minutes. On holidays is the best time for me, either on the plane, or long train journey, or at the beach.
I’m currently reading Jeffery Deaver (how I love him!) and his latest novel The Burning Wire. He is the best writer I know for suspense and just plain pulling the rug out from under you. There’s a twist, then another..and then another. What you thought you knew, you didn’t.
